Desert Road Trip: West Texas, Arizona, & New Mexico

Chris and I (and Honey!) took a little desert road trip last Thanksgiving, and this year I’m reminiscing hard. We are planning to stay in town for the holidays this year, but it sure is fun to revisit past trips.

Last year around this time I felt the need for a getaway and a desert road trip fit the bill. I find the desert to be restorative, and it was just fun to hit the road, listen to a great audiobook, and slow down just a bit before the rush of the holiday season.

I’ve put together a little photo travelogue if you’d like to take a look…

We split our trip over two days and spent our first night in Marfa. Since Honey was with us, we stayed at the dog-friendly Hotel Saint George. We walked all over town for the afternoon and grabbed oysters and Old Fashions in the lobby for dinner.

The next morning, we grabbed breakfast at Marfa Burrito, then made our way to Tucson, Arizona to stay with my aunt and uncle for a few nights.

Once we were in Tucson we took it easy. My aunt and uncle’s beautiful home includes cultivated grounds just outside Saguaro National Park, and every evening we watched the famous Arizona sunset from their garden.

We took a significant detour on our way home to see the famous White Sands National Park in New Mexico.

We were blown away by the dunes! It was a gorgeous day, and the stark white sand against the bright blue sky was stunning.

I think Honey had the best time of all!

As we drove toward home, we experienced an incredible, cotton-candy sky — the perfect end-cap on our trip.
